Culminating Blog Reflection

I decided to do my Capstone project on physical therapy and chiropractic services because while in the 8th grade I had broken my tibia while playing football. I didnt recieve any treatment after my injury, so at that point I decided I would like to help athletes both young and old recover from their injuries.

I met with Dr. cheng several days before the mentor agreements were due. Since I am currently on the speech team, I used my speaking ability to my advantage. I tried to impress him with my speaking ability. We discussed our schedules and decided that Mondays and Fridays were the best days for us. Throughout the project I encountered days where I had forgotten to blog my hours due to my procrastination problems, so we also met Wednesdays on occasions. At times we would discuss the importance of chiropractic services which brought me back to my biology days, honestly biology was not my strong point. While meeting with Dr. Cheng, I met Virginia. She had been working for Cheng for about 6 years. I feel as though she had the biggest impact on me emotionally. We talked about her child who had been in an accident and had obtained brain damage. Although she goes though extremely tough hardships she continues to stay positive. Most people in society do not show compassion towards each other and thats a big issue with the world. I also met Dr. Cheng's children they are crazy little ones. His daughter is an amazing swimmer who is training for the Olympics. His son wants to play football but its not my place to ruin someones dreams. I think if he works hard at it, he can accomplish big things.

After spending over 25 hours, I really grew attached to the people there. I can honestly say that I wont forget them. They taught me a lot within the few hours we had. I know they will accomplish great things. I truly am lucky to have found such a great mentor.

End of the Line May 9th 2014

Today is the last day meeting with Dr. Cheng. It's been amazing watching him do his thing and I'm sad to see it come to an end. I spent my last few hours watching him work with an entire new patient. I also broke down some old files. It's been a pleasure. I do believe chiropracting and physical therapy will play a part in what I decide to pursue in college. It's been fun. It was sad to say good bye to some of the employees. We had a little goodbye celebration. We came to the end of the line.

Recording Time May 5th, 2014

Today me and Cheng recorded a walk through of a typical patient. He took me through the whole process that new patients go through. First we start with talking about family history of diseases or anything hereditary. Then it goes to what part of the body is in pain. So he test movements and if anything seem irregular he marks it down. Dr. Cheng specializes in the shoulders and back. So after the examination he might request for an MRI if he is unable to determine what's causing the pain. If it seems like a minor problem, he puts the electric pages which stimulate the muscles and get the back into normal movements along with a heating pad. After about 30 minutes he cracks the upper back, lower back, and neck. He said that some people feel as if colors are brighter or their lungs are more open. Personally it felt amazing! I'm excited for our last meet, it's going to be sad no doubt. But he says he has things planned. So stay tunned.

The Dog Days are Over April 16th

I walk in to the building and I see several people waiting to be seen by Dr. Cheng. There were a couple who weren't comfortable with me watching. But I still got see Dr. Cheng in action. Some patients come in with chronic pain, injuries from car accidents. Dr. Cheng gave me some good advice when busting the office, always listen, it's okay to listen in on people conversation. The stories you here are incredible! You get civil engineers, airport workers, accountants, all kinds of people. There was a good story about fixing airplanes (it caught my attention because I want to be an aerospace engineer!). I asked a woman who works in the office how long she has been working for Dr. Cheng. She said for about 6 years or so, however she has been working for chiropractic services for over 17 years. She said she does it because she loves helping people. It was really heartfelt. I mean they are helpin people's lives one appointment at a time. On Friday I'm going to ask Dr. Cheng if it would be okay to film him working on me! Let's hope it goes well.

The Dog Days, April 14th

Spent time with Dr. Chang discussing previous patients, can you believe he worked on Keanu Reeves! Trust me it's legit, he showed me his file. Pretty cool right? Well I was in shock to hear that, Dr. Cheng working with famous people. I think my mentor is officially awesome! Well anyway Cheng has worked with civil cases, one that really caught my attention was a murder case. It's a really intense and traumatic thing. So apparently according to Cheng, the defendant wasn't able to life a one pound weight off the table however she was being prosecuted for the murder of her son. She was found guilty, my question to that is how? Cheng and I believe that she was wrongly convicted. How is it possible for a person so weak could murder her son. It was incredibly heartbreaking to read (I checked with Dr. Cheng, he said it's okay to tell the story). Man, the stories you hear are incredible. I still need to be worked on, I know I've been lagging in that aspect I'm sorry if you're waiting for my reaction to it. Trust me, it's coming and honestly I'm scared, but I'm ready.

Slow Days April 12th
It was a relatively slow day, not many people come in. I guess I have bad luck with appointment days. I've gotten really close to his son. He is a cool kid. I really enjoy the massage chair it's pretty cool. Since I'm under 18 I need a parents permission to get worked on. I'm sort of scared to get my back and my neck cracked. It's safe but it's always a little scary you know? Plus it gives me the creeps hearing joints and bones cracking. So my goal is to get my parents permission. I'm nervous but I believe I'm ready.

Getting in the Groove April 7th, 2014

I'm starting to feel more comfortable in the environment. I'm more open to asking questions and talking to Dr. Cheng. I've been watching him work on patients and he's given me some important tips on figuring out an injury. I'm getting a little nervous because I'm seeing people getting their upper back, neck, and lower back, pretty soon he is going to work on me just to go through the experience. Hopefully it goes well. Lately business has been slow which in my opinion is a big downer because I don't see as many patients as I would like. Well next meeting if it's not busy he will work on me. Let's hope it's busy for my sake.
